Sleep Dentistry
Dental Procedures Under General Anaesthesia
We know that dental anxiety is very real — and for some people, it’s the reason they’ve put off treatment for years. Sleep dentistry allows you to have dental procedures carried out comfortably and safely while you are completely asleep, meaning no stress, no anxiety, and no awareness of the procedure at all.
What Is Sleep Dentistry?
Sleep dentistry refers to dental treatment performed under general anaesthesia (GA). You will be fully asleep throughout the procedure, administered and monitored by a qualified anaesthetist. It’s a safe and well-established option for patients who:
- Experience severe dental anxiety or phobia
- Have had traumatic dental experiences in the past
- Require complex or extensive dental work
- Have a strong gag reflex
- Have special needs or medical conditions that make routine dental care challenging
- Are having wisdom teeth removed or other surgical procedures
What to Expect
Your dentist will assess your suitability for sleep dentistry at a consultation appointment. We’ll review your medical history, discuss the treatment plan, and coordinate with the anaesthetic team.
On the day of your procedure, you will need to fast beforehand (we’ll give you clear instructions) and arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for the remainder of the day. You’ll be comfortable and monitored throughout, and most patients are surprised by how quickly and smoothly it goes.
After the procedure, you’ll recover in our care before being discharged — feeling no pain and often with a significant amount of treatment completed in one session.
Is It Safe?
General anaesthesia for dental procedures is safe when administered by a qualified anaesthetist in an appropriately equipped facility. We will take a thorough medical history and ensure you are a good candidate before proceeding. Your safety is our absolute priority.
